Archias Beginnnings….

The Archias chapter Beginnings trace back to the Fall Semester of 2002 when Archias Founding Brother Edwin Suarez Jr., then a high school senior was introduced to Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. (LSU) by Brian Martinez (founding brother of the Cayuga Chapter at Lemoyne College). After Edwin met Brian he was in awe with what he came across and he wondered if one day he too could become a brother of LSU. This encounter stayed fresh in Edwin’s mind throughout the rest of his time in high school and when he finally started school at Syracuse, New York, nearly a year later he already knew what he wanted to be a part of.

When Edwin entered the 2002 Summer program at Syracuse, he met the person who would become one of his fellow Archias Chapter founding brothers, Pedro Villanueva Jr. Pedro and Edwin were both Puerto Ricans from the Bronx, New York so they could relate to each other on many levels. Edwin now felt that is was his duty to introduce Pedro to LSU, because he was confident that he too would fall in love with the organization and to no surprise he did. The Cayuga Chapter brothers took both Edwin that Pedro under their wings and embraced them almost as their own. Now that the two were on the same page they sought out to make the dream of starting a chapter of LSU a reality. Although these two these two men put in a lot of time and effort to be considered for the intake process they were ultimately turned down by the LSU national board.

Why did we name our chapter Archias?

Archias was the founder of the city of Syracusa in Sicily; which is where the name "Syracuse" devires from. The story of Archias is as follows: Archias was forbidden to return to Corinth, a city in Greece. As a direct result of this, he gathered up his family and followers and headed west for Sicily. The location he found was brilliant; it commanded an ideal position on the eastern coast of Sicily from which he could exercise control of the island and across the Ionean Sea. The Marshes around the city served as protection from invaders and this is where the name Syrakousai was derived from.

Archias was given an opportunity by the oracle to choose between health or financial prosperity for his newly found city. He chose financial prosperity and thus Syracuse became one of the wealthiest and most successful cities of its time. Strabo writes: "the men of Syracuse proved to have the gift of leadership" and Syracusa grew not only in wealth, but also in political influence through the 5th and 4th centuries.

AYO KYO!!!

"Two roads diverged in a wood and I I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference." -Robert Frost

"On February 22nd, 3 men stood at a crossroad. A crossroad I have stood at myself, along with every other brother that has chosen to act, when standing idly by would have been easier. Since that day I have seen 3 men become so much more than the sum of their parts. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your guide on your journey, but it has also been my blessing. My blessing, because with every step you take on your journey, I grow as do you.

Prometheus, never stop giving your "fire" for your fellow man. Sacrifice is who you are. And thank you for trusting me. You exemplified brotherhood that day. Mucaro, you are the voice of reason and you continue to lead by example. Beware the fury of a patient man. And finally, Lazarus, you were reborn for a reason. Like a phoenix you rose from the ashes of your former self, stronger and wiser. Give others the chance to live again as you have. And stay away from canoes. Gentleman your successes will be in private and you will always fail in public, but know that you are already a success. You took the road less traveled. And that has made all the difference."
